On August 18, 2020, the Vietnam National University – Hanoi (VNU) and the ASEAN University Network (AUN) co-organized the International Workshop on University Performance Metrics and launched a higher education rating system developed by Vietnam named “University Performance Metrics”(UPM), as well as firstly announced the rating results for 30 higher education institutions in Vietnam and ASEAN. The event received the participation of Minister of Education and Training Mr. Phung Xuan Nha, VNU President Mr. Nguyen Kim Son, Dr. Choltis Dhirathiti – Executive Director of AUN, together with representatives of higher education institutions and scientists.
This year, there are 5 ASEAN universities and 25 universities in Vietnam are rated by UPM Star Ratings. According to the initial result, application-oriented higher education institutions meeting a 4-star standard include: Foreign Trade University, Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, Thu Dau Mot University, Quy Nhon University, West Visayas University (the Philippines), and Nguyen Tat Thanh University. Those 4-star universities are prestigious universities in the country and the region. The result has showed a true and positive view of the higher education quality of universities in Vietnam and the region, providing useful and multidimensional information to other universities, students, employers and managers for their references.
Nguyen Tat Thanh University achieved 4-star rating by University Performance Metrics (UPM)
Being among the first 30 universities with star ratings is well-deserved for efforts of Nguyen Tat Thanh University during the past time, when continuously achieving the quality accreditations by the Ministry of Education and Training as well as being granted the 4-star certificate by the QS (United Kingdom). Four training programs successfully completed the AUN-QA Programme Assessment, three training programs met the accreditation standards under the Circular No. 04 of the Ministry of Education and Training. Based on that orientation, the University applied for UPM rating system for quality evaluation since October 2019 and proudly achieve a 4 star.
Addressing at the event, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thi Hong, Vice President of Nguyen Tat Thanh University said that with experiences of participating in many international ranking systems, NTTU found that the UPM system is very compatible with international standards. This would be the foundation for the University to adjust and analyze its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and challenges, as well as build KPI indicators for the development strategy of the University”.

UPM stands for University Performance Metrics, is a higher education ranking system developed by a research team of VNU with the orientation to meet innovation requirements and adapt to 4th industrial revolution in Vietnam. UPM evaluates Ranking on research index of higher education institutions, Ranking on publication size index of higher education institutions, Ranking on the average papers per faculty of higher education institutions, Ranking on the average citation index of higher education institutions, Ranking on internal research index of higher education institution and UPM Star Ratings.
The criteria of UPM Star Ratings include standards commonly found in accreditation systems such as Education, Research, Internationalization, Community Services, Strategic Governance, Innovation, Innovation Ecosystems, Information Technology and Digital Resources. This shall be a very effective communication channel for both students and families in choosing the right study environment; for employers in recruiting as well as making decisions in collaboration between higher education institutions and businesses; giving a chance for the universities to be self-aware, since then build the development strategy to use all internal resources as well as utilize external resources.
Previously, on 26 to 28 November, 2019, the 15th Asia Pacific Professional Leaders in Education (QS-APPLE) was taken place in Japan. The conference was organized by Kyushu University (Fukuoka, Japan), attracted more than 40 universities from the Asia Pacific region and some other countries around the world. Nguyen Tat Thanh University was one of three universities in Vietnam participating in this conference.
Nguyen Tat Thanh University receives the certificate of 4 star standard of QS Stars (UK)
In the framework of the conference, the QS Organization (UK) awarded star-rating certificates to universities in 2019. Nguyen Tat Thanh University was the only representative of Vietnam to honorably receive the 4 star certificate.
